Fort Madison, Iowa - 133 Years Of Railroading

The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad rolled into Fort Madison in 1869.  But it was the Santa Fe's crossing of the Mississippi River in 1887 that put Fort Madison permanently on the nation's railroad map.  This Train Cam takes you back in history while providing a focus on today's latest railroad technology along Burlington Northern Santa Fe's "Transcon Route":

  • 60+ trains daily, from all of the Class 1 railroads, gallop across the world's largest double-deck swingspan bridge.
  • Opening the bridge's 525-foot swingspan forces several eastbound trains each day stop on front of the the town's namesake, a replica of the original 1808 military outpost constructed to protect trade with North American native Indians.
  • The Santa Fe's restored 2913, a magnificent 1943 Baldwin 4-8-4 steam locomotive with top-speeds over 120 MPH, sits quitely along the mainline.
  • Amtrak's Southwest Chief rolls by the Santa Fe Depot twice daily.  This mission-style building was constructed in 1909 and is now a museum listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
