Moncks Corner, South Carolina

Moncks Corner is the seat of Berkeley County and the gateway to South Carolina's Lowcountry, sitting on the shores of Lake Moultrie about 30 miles north of Charleston. The town grew up around a crossroads that was fought over during the Revolutionary War and later became the headquarters of Santee Cooper, whose lakes made the area a magnet for world-class fishing and boating. Today it's a fast growing community of over 12,000 with a walkable downtown, easy access to Charleston, and a rail line running right through the heart of it.

Moncks Corner as we know it exists because of the railroad. In 1856 the Northeastern Railroad constructed a new station about a mile away from the old settlement, and the town grew up around it, incorporating in 1885 and becoming the county seat in 1895. The Northeastern became part of the Atlantic Coast Line, then Seaboard Coast Line, and finally CSX, which still runs the route today. Built in 1884, the first Depot was across the street from the current location. After its destruction by fire in 1915, the existing building was constructed. The depot was renovated in 2000 and now serves as the town's visitor and cultural center, so the historic station still stands trackside for a classic backdrop
